The restaurant welcomed us with a staircase lightened up by classic Chinese lanterns. Once we stepped inside, the Oriental decorations in the dining room made us gobsmacked and I was absolutely obsessed with the beautiful murals on the wall.

The restaurant’s contemporary chic look promised a meal of various flavors with a twist. As usual, I took this opportunity to reveal the top 3 dishes that are loved by the diners here! Don’t forget to read until the end as exciting news are awaiting you there!

1/ Salmon Tartar With Quail Eggs and Caviar

Click here to view Salmon Tartar with Quail Eggs and Caviar

We decided to embark on our indulgence by treating the palate to something refreshing. And this signature Salmon Tartar with Quail Eggs and Caviar quickly enticed us just by its appearance alone! As suggested by its name, the dish features quail eggs and salmon tartar using high-quality salmon mixed with finely chopped cucumber and shallot before being topped with a generous amount of imported Norwegian caviar. I took a spoonful of the tartar, mingled with the house-made Thai chili sauce, sweet basil and this exciting combination was rejuvenating enough to excite my taste buds.

2/ Wagyu Pho with Buckwheat Noodles

Click here to view Wagyu Pho with Buckwheat Noodles at FOOK!

Here comes an interesting take on the classic Vietnamese Pho together with Japanese Soba – Wagyu Pho with Buckwheat Noodles. This signature dish is a ravishing reinterpretation of 2 cultures in one bowl. My eyes quickly fixed on the slices of high marbling Wagyu beef aesthetically put atop the buckwheat noodles. Pour the piping hot beef broth into the bowl and you can relish this magnificent combination. The melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu did not let me down at all while the buckwheat noodles surprisingly blended nicely with the broth. My small tip – quickly enjoy the bowl while it is hot to avoid the noodles being flaky!

3/ Smoked Beef Brisket in Charcoal Bun

Click here to view Smoked Beef Brisket In Charcoal Bun at FOOK!

Finally, we ended our meal with the signature Smoked Beef Brisket in Charcoal Bun. I was amazed to know that it took 2 whole days to prepare this signature dish – the beef was marinated 1 day before being slow-smoked for another day! The beef was no doubt tender-to-the-bite as you can easily feel every strip of it. Its strong smoke-infused taste was then balanced by the sweet corn, parsley and house-made charcoal bun. A dish for those who love teasing the taste buds with intense flavors.

Click here to view Simply Malay Buka Puasa Buffet at Bijan Bar & Restaurant

Tuck Into ‘Simply Malay’ Buka Puasa Buffet Dinner @ Bijan Bar & Restaurant!

What’s better than delighting the taste buds at one of your favorite restaurants? Not to mention it is a multi-award winning restaurant focusing on fine Malay cuisine which is much-loved by discerning foodies? That’s why I was contented to get an invitation from Bijan Bar & Restaurant to experience their “Simply Malay” Buka Puasa Buffet Dinner to rediscover Malay food heritage with a variety of soul-satisfying dishes and heart-warming flavors.

View Bijan Bar & Restaurant EnvironmentThe restaurant welcomed us with its warm and lush interiors.

Just a few steps away from KLCC, my colleagues and I reached Bijan Bar & Restaurant on a rainy day. The lush backdrop, artistic decorations, wonderful background music and attentive staff totally made it a perfect dining spot to cherish your moments with family and friends! We quickly forgot about the rain earlier and were gobsmacked as in front of our eyes were buffet stations neatly set under the golden-hued light, enticing with lines of enthralling delights that we could not wait to chow down on.

My eyes quickly fixed on the Satay Station as I was seduced by the irresistible aroma emanated from the enthralling pieces of the grilled-on-the-spot satays such as Satay Udang, Satay Sotong, Satay Perut (tripes satay), Satay Daging and more.

Click here to view Satay StationSatay skewers with fascinating sizzling sounds and tempting aroma.

Marinated with fine herbs for hours, the satays were infused with tangy flavors while still maintaining their moist texture despite the strong heat of the charcoal. I have to give it up to the homemade peanut sauce which was absolutely outstanding. The sauce was not only delightful with its moderate sweetness but also brought out the best tastes of the satays. Amongst all, the Satay Perut amazed me the most as unlike the common stretchy texture, this Satay Perut had such tenderness that one could not resist from savoring one more!

If you do not mind a bit of smoke, don’t forget to catch the chef in action as well! You should also keep an eye on the special Otak-otak which features scrumptious sea bass as it was flavorsome and also recommended by the chef!

Click here to view appetizerYou can tease your palate with some appetizers such as Gado-gado, Cucur Jagung, Keropok Lekor and Cendawan Goreng.

If you can refrain from the temptation of the Satay Station (which I failed obviously), you can embark on this hearty affair by tucking into some appetizers first. There are a variety of mouth-watering selections of appetizers for you to choose including Gado-gado, Getok Ubi, Keropok Lekor, Cendawan Goreng, Kerabu Nangka, Kerabu Betik and Kerabu Sotong Bakar.

I was delighted by the Gadogado (Lotek) for its ingredients which are light and refreshing – perfect for the start of a heavy (and yet lip-smacking) indulgence.

Click here to view Cucur JagungThe Cucur Jagung is delightful with its crunchiness and splendid balance of sweetness and savory.

As someone who loves the bursting flavors of Kerabu, I did not miss out a chance to get a taste of the 3 types of Kerabu here.

Not only did the Kerabu dishes excited my taste buds with the rejuvenating freshness but they also warmed my heart with their nostalgia flavors.

Bakar Station featuring Ayam Golek, Ikan Kerapu and Lidah Salai.

Here comes the main dishes! If you are a fan of bakar delicacies, you would not be able to keep your feet on the ground (literally!). In front of my eyes was a 5kg Ikan Kerapu (grouper or garoupa) which was meticulously roasted in banana leaves! Dip its firm and smoke-infused meat into your favorite sambal and you would be elated! Did I tell you that there are up to 15 types of sambal here? Yup! You read it correctly!
If you are adventurous enough, you can challenge yourself with the in-house smoked beef tongue – Lidah Salai or you can stick with a safer choice which is the Ayam Golek

Inspired by his mother’s recipe, Head Chef Razis decided to have an interesting take on the traditional Laksa by adding a little twist which resulted in an extraordinary flavorsome gravy. I crafted my own Laksa with a bit of sambal and it mingled with the Laksa perfectly. Don’t forget to scoop more broth into your bowl as you will not want to stop savoring this luscious gravy!

Happily stuffed with a luscious bowl of Laksa, I shifted my attention to an array of traditional delights beautifully nestled in clay pots featuring Udang Masak Lemak Nenas, Ayam Kampung Limau Purut, Gulai Kambing, Rendang Daging Hijau, Nasi Minyak, Sotong Masak Hitam. The vibrant colors of these dishes promised bursting flavors in the mouth and with that thought alone, I could not stop myself from the involuntary salivation.

I started to pamper my palate with the Sotong Masak Hitam as its mysterious look triggered my curiosity. You might be reluctant by its somewhat unpretentious appearance yet keep in mind that the flavors will do all the talking! The squid was, to my surprise, superb tender yet not flaky at all with a delicate sweetness that lingered on the taste buds.

I have always been an advocate of Rendang dishes at Bijan Bar & Restaurant and this Rendang Daging Hijau is yet another lip-smacking Rendang dish to die for! The slow-cooked caramelized beef was packed with aromatic flavors that enticed my taste buds. The beef meat was no doubt fork-tender and juicy and each bite was satisfied as it oozed an irresistible sweetness. Definitely the winner of taste for me!

The Ayam Kampung Limau Purut is one of the chef’s favorites. This free-range chicken was cooked until it was infused with the tangy flavors from the kaffir lime leaves – a compelling combination which you should pay attention to!

Full and satisfied savoring all the main dishes, I finally indulged myself in the tantalizing morsels of desserts which, impressively, were all meticulously crafted by the chefs here.

I was stunned to know that this is just one of the 4 special rotating tailored menus which will be served in the holy month! These home-sweet-home delights captured my heart for its perfect renditions of old-school tastes and innovative twist. A hearty buffet to cherish the moment of togetherness!

Luxuriate In 3 Delectable Delights at Izakaya by Sango @ Sri Hartamas

Last week was so hectic that my friends and I couldn’t wait for the weekend to relax in a laid-back atmosphere and have a little chit-chat. What’s better than hanging out in a casual Japanese pub to chow down on sumptuous Japanese foods and relish some drinks? That’s why we decided to head to Izakaya by Sango @ Desa Sri Hartamas!

As suggested by the word “Izakaya” (informal Japanese pub) in its name, the restaurant offers a menu of decent price with the setting suitable for a casual meet-up. This modern progressive Japanese bar is actually a spin-off from the renowned Izakaya by Sango (since 1995). Cozy interior and friendly staffs, we immediately fell in love!

1/ Wagyu Tobanyaki

Click here to view Wagyu Tobanyaki at Izakaya by Sango

The first dish – Wagyu Tobanyaki, totally caught my attention when it was presented. To be honest, I am one frenzy advocate of high-quality Wagyu on “Tobanyaki” – a cooking technique in which meat is roasted on a ceramic plate. That’s why this plate of 150g of perfectly-sliced Wagyu meat with gorgeous marblings accompanied by assorted vegetables was eye-catching enough to satiate my craving.

Click here to view Wagyu Tobanyaki

The beef, interestingly, will be cooked by diners themselves yet you can ask for help from the restaurant’s staff if needed. We put one piece of the marvelous Wagyu on the hot ceramic plate and its sizzling sounds were so satisfying that we could not keep ourselves from silently screaming in excitement. The rich, fat-friendly and savory Wagyu beef thrilled us with its juiciness, softness and smoothness. An impeccable indulgence!

2/ Sango Signature Platter

Click here to view Izakaya by Sango Signature Platter

The second dish is the top-selling platter filled with flavors – Sango Signature Platter. The platter features tsukune (Japanese chicken meatball), chicken wings, salmon cubes, Wagyu cubes and sweet potato. You might need to take note that the sweet potato might subject to availability (as replaced by the okra skewer shown in the image). Grilled on charcoal, the skewers were infused with a distinct aroma. Just squeeze a bit of lemon and dip these delights in the tare sauce (a thick, sweet soy sauce) with egg yolk and you wouldn’t stop savoring them! I love the Wagyu as it didn’t have that sketchy texture of overcooked beef while the wings won my heart for their crispy goodness.

3/ Truffled Wagyu Donburi

Click here to view Truffled Wagyu Donburi at Izakaya by Sango

Here comes the last dish which is also my most favorite dish of the day – Truffled Wagyu Donburi! This much-loved Donburi (rice bowl dish) is embellished with tender cuts of medium rare Wagyu beef with Italian-imported truffle oil drizzled on top. I was amazed by the way the truffle oil complemented the melt-in-the-mouth and juicy Wagyu meat as they were such a match in flavors! If you love your rice to be a bit soft, you can mix the whole bowl with the savory tamago (half-boiled egg) beautifully set aside. Definitely a must-try!

View Interesting Facts about Afternoon Tea

Weekly Reads: In-TEA-resting Facts About Your Favorite Afternoon Tea!

Afternoon Tea is a long-standing British tradition and it has become so well-known that you can easily enjoy it at hotels, restaurants or even bars! Some of you might be frenzy advocates of this quintessential tradition for their delicious treats and etiquette, yet the following facts would make you treasure it even more.

1/ The Origin of Afternoon Tea

Click here to view Afternoon Tea at Pavilions LoungeImage Cre: Pavilion Lounges @ Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur

If you think reveling in an Afternoon Tea is interesting, you would also fall in love with the story behind how this tradition was originated. It is believed that in the 18th and 19th century, English people often got hungry during the long gap between lunch and dinner which was very late in the evening. Annoyed by this hunger pains,  Anna Maria Russell – the Duchess of Bedford, scheduled her time to enjoy a light meal of cakes and sandwiches which she believed was an excellent stand-in in the middle of the afternoon. She soon began to invite her friends along to enjoy it and so the craze became a legend.

2/  Is It “Scone With The Wind” Or “Games Of Scones”?

Click here to view Afternoon Tea at Newens Tea HouseImage Cre: Newens Tea House

The pronunciation of “Scone” is surprisingly still controversial up till now! It can either be pronounced as “Gone” or Throne”! Step back in time, the origin of the word “Scone” is believed to have come from the Dutch word “Schoonbrot” which means “beautiful bread” and later was changed to a shorter version which we know as “Scone”! There is no right or wrong in how you call it. Although you might keep in mind that some more pedantic experts would argue the correct pronunciation of scone is like “gone”!

3/ The Difference Between Afternoon Tea and Hi-Tea

Click here to view Afternoon Tea at THIRTY8Image Cre: THIRTY8 @ Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur

Many have mistaken “High Tea” and “Afternoon Tea” as one. If you do think so, this fact might surprise you! There was actually a huge difference between these two! “Afternoon Tea” (also known as “Low Tea”) was originated for the upper class, while “High Tea” was designed for a working-class man’s main meal of the day! The Afternoon Tea, therefore, will feature delicate finger foods ranging from small sandwiches to scones, pastries and cakes. On the other hand, as a working class could not afford such an indulgent treat, their tea set will be full of heartier affair like meat, pies and crackers and served on a high table as indicated by the term “high” in its name. Nowadays, fewer differences are seen between these two traditions.

4/ Did You Hold It Correctly?

Click here to view Afternoon TeaImage Cre: visitlondon

The standard correct way to hold a teacup is with one or two fingers of the hand put through the hole of the cup handle. The cup should be balanced with your thumb on top and your other fingers curled underneath. Although it’s not compulsory and unnecessary nowadays, the etiquette of holding a traditional teacup might be something you will find enjoyable to know. The holding can be a little tricky as you gotta try to lift your pinkie finger out to look proper. It is believed that the raised pinkie was started by a noblewoman and mimicked by the Royal family.

5/ Milk First or Tea First? Jam First or Cream First?

Image Cre: The Daily Mail

In the past, milk is added to the teacup first to protect the delicate china from the hot tea. As time’s gone, it is more common now to add the tea first, followed by the milk. How about jam and cream? It has been a debate raging on for decades about whether to put jam or cream on your scone first! Actually, it depends mainly on where the tradition is from or where you are having your tea! In Cornwall, it’s jam then cream yet in Devon, people will do the opposite!

Can’t wait to indulge yourself in an Afternoon Tea or High Tea in Klang Valley already? We have just the list hand-picked for you! Check out Newens Tea House, Pavilion Lounge at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, Altitude at Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur, THIRTY8 at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Nobu Kuala Lumpur, The Lounge & Oro Cafe at Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Bistro 160 at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur!

The beef tempted our taste buds with its tenderness and juiciness while the foie gras melted on the tongue, exuding distinct flavors which were complemented by the balsamic palm sugar glaze. Portobello mushroom and onion cranberry jam were added to balance the taste, making this burger our top favorite!

Another hard-to-resist delight is this Downtown Tokyo. Inspired by Japanese cuisine, the burger is made of deep-fried soft shell crab with a touch of wasabi mayo and some rocket leaves served in charcoal buns. We were a bit doubtful at first to try this exotic patty but we then immediately fell in love with the combination. The soft-shell crab was perfectly fried to reach an incredible crunchiness whereas its taste gave a mild kick on the tongue. A wonderful experience.

Sloppy Joe
– as its name suggests, is best to enjoy messily! The burger is made of sautéed beef patty in barbecue sauce, melted cheese and topped with onion rings. We were overwhelmed with the big portion of the burger yet excited at the same time!  Sumptuous cheesy beef patty mingling with crunchy onion rings, this classic burger is a delightful mess which would make you come back for more.
