[ELITE Review] 3 Must-Try Signature Dishes at Cicchetti Di Zenzero, Kuala Lumpur

Cicchetti Di Zenzero is, inarguably, one of the go-to restaurants of many Italian food aficionados in Kuala Lumpur. Reasons are varied for why people choose to come to this food haven. Some say they are addicted to the exquisite cicchetti (the bite-sized appetizers or “Italian tapas”) that well represent Italia in KL here. Others believe they are in love with the welcoming atmosphere where they can have a little chit-chat whilst relishing a delicious cicchetto and thirst-quenching wine. Sometimes, it’s not because of any solid reasons that drive someone here but simply just for an indulgence in authentic Venetian cicchetti.

We came to Cichetti Di Zenzero in the pursuit of an unforgettable Italian dining adventure. Of course, we would not want you to miss out the chance to take joy in the best dishes here and that’s why we will share with you the 3 dishes that we love the most while dining here!

1/ Il Tagliere Di Affettati

It’s hard to resist ordering some authentic cold cuts first to whet our palate. What’s better than trying chef’s selection of four types of cold cuts that took months to cure? Not to mention this pork-free Italian cold cuts for 2 also feature 3 kinds of delectable cheese (one type of hard cheese and two types of medium-hard cheese) and beautifully garnished with a few homemade sun-dried tomatoes and olive on top. Filled with authentic Italian flavors and a well-balanced taste of saltiness and sweetness, the Il Tagliere Di Affettati is perfect to pair with a cup of wine!

2/ Angel Hair With Sardinian Bottarga

Another dish that we would highly recommend you is the gorgeous Angel Hair With Sardinian Bottarga. The traditional aglio olio easily won our hearts for its fresh-to-the-bite tiger prawns which are carefully handpicked and the flavorful, delectable bottarga – salted fish roes, which mingle perfectly with the angel hair pasta. If you have a knack for spicy food, you would love the addition of the red chilies which impart mild spiciness that nicely accentuates the flavors of the dish.

3/ Slow and Low

The last dish – Slow and Low, caught us by surprise. As lamb shank is a dish that requires considerable skills to bring out the best of its taste, we were quite amazed to see how excellently this classic Italian ossobuco (special Lombard cuisine braised with vegetable, white wine and broth) is cooked here! As suggested by its name, the lamb shank is slowly braised for hours until it has a melt-in-the-mouth texture before being put on top of creamy polenta. This Slow and Low is absolutely our favorite dish of the day and of course, you should also give it a try!

Signature Dishes Review: Opus Bistro, Jalan Bangkung, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

“Opus” by definition mean a work of art and so goes to this hearty Italian restaurant. Opus Bistro is tucked away in the quieter part of Bangsar in Jalan Bangkung. To date, Opus Bistro has been serving up satisfied customers for almost 16 years and along the way has won many prestigious awards, including being voted as the top 20 restaurants in KL. Who would have thought a restaurant which started out as a hobby among a few friends who shared the similar interest of good food and wine has evolved to the success of 4 other sister restaurants located along the same stretch.

We swung by their subtle yet simplistic restaurant anticipating for a journey of hearty Italian flavours. The ambience of soft music, warm lighting coupled with minimalistic feel of the décor sets the mood for a cosy meal. Seated at an open-air table on their restaurant front somewhat enhance the dining experience as the neighborhood was quiet and we could feel some light breeze.

1) Spaghetti ala Opus (RM 40++)

Signature Spaghetti ala Opus with generous portion of fresh and succulent seafood.

The signature dish here are the Spaghetti ala Opus, Roasted Cod and Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb. Hearty and warming, just by mentioning these signature dishes is enough to trigger involuntary salivation. First up was the famous Spaghetti ala Opus which is a generous plate of spaghetti coated in a light clean tomato sauce, sweet cherry tomatoes and packed with fresh succulent seafood.

Highlight of this Signature Dish, the fresh and succulent seafood.

For this dish, the seafood is the highlight, as the chef might want customers to taste the freshness in the seafood rather than risk overpowering the flavor. As mentioned, the generous portion of seafood was fresh and almost seemed like a seafood parade on itself, titillating us to eat it. Definitely a dish that should not be missed when dining here at Opus Bistro.

2) Roasted Cod (RM 88++)

Perfectly Roasted Cod laid atop of fresh potatoes, carrots and topped with sweet cherry tomatoes and black olives.

Next up was the Roasted Cod. A generous piece of fresh cod roasted to perfection, laid on top of fresh potatoes, carrots and topped with sweet cherry tomatoes and black olives. What impressed us the most was the aroma that radiated from the dish. Not to exaggerate but, we could pick up a pleasing aroma even before the roasted cod was served to us. Such an irresistible attraction for fish lovers! We believed the tantalizing smell was not only from the fish itself but also from the blend of buttery smell and some dill sprinkled on the plate.

The mouth-watering aroma of the Roasted Cod still lingers in my memory.

This dish had the perfect balance of taste as it was savoury in a non-overpowering manner. The texture of the flaky roasted cod melts in the mouth with a buttery after taste leaving you wanting more. In my opinion, this signature dish is highly recommended for anyone who love a well prepared and fresh fish dish.

3) Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb (RM 83++)

The Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb skillfully seared on the outside whilst maintaining a juicy, pink interior, coupled with a delightful mint sauce.

After the Roasted Cod took us away, we were expecting the next best dish and my, did they deliver with their signature Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb. This dish is the icing on the cake as it is the perfect ending to an amazing journey of taste. The Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb has three substantial cutlets skillfully seared on the outside whilst maintaining a juicy, pink interior, coupled with a mint sauce which perfectly balances the seasoned meat. In a nutshell, every dish served has exceeded my expectation, delivering a mouth-watering, eyes-closed-in-appreciation kind of feeling.

The Signature Dish that got me mouth-watering, eyes-closed-in-appreciation kind of feeling.

Ultimately, I would personally recommend patrons to tried out the Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb which I personally love the most. The Grilled Rack of Lamb truly left its mark and deserve a place in my heart. Coming in the second place would be the Roasted Cod which is suitable for those who prefer fresh and lighter tasting dishes. Lastly, the Spaghetti ala Opus did not disappoint either with its generous portion of fresh succulent seafood.

Food Review: Neroteca Bukit Ceylon, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Known as the first authentic Italian restaurant to serve pork in KL, Neroteca Bukit Ceylon has been in operation for over 11 years, tucked away within the Seri Bukit Ceylon Serviced Residence. Its warm and cosy interior accompanied by friendly staffs sets the mood for a laid-back dining experience.

Notice that there are some interesting decorations of pots, garlic and preserved sausages hanging on top the restaurant.

The restaurant decoration featured many Italian products such as pasta, drinks and a vast selection of liquor which they serve. Another highlight are their impressive assortment of deli and cheese imported from Italy that's on display, which is also for sale. Once entered, we can immediately smell the aroma of hearty Italian food lingering in the air drifting from the open kitchen which we appreciate. Judging from our first impression we have already fallen in love with the ambience of the restaurant.

1. La Porchetta    (RM65++)

Beautifully plated La Porchetta drizzled with demi-glace sauce.

Now that we have settled down, we were served by the waiter and he recommended us to try Neroteca’s signature dishes. After a friendly chat with the waiter, we decided to proceed with three of their signature dishes. First up was Neroteca’s La Porchetta, slices of porchetta beautifully plated on a wooden board and drizzle with rich demi-glacé sauce.

On the side are perfectly sautéed baby potatoes and generous slices of house-made bread. The bread is namely, Roman Focaccia and Rustic Bread which are made fresh daily and taste amazing too. Now back to our main character which is the slices of La Porchetta, crispy on the outside and tender in the inside, leaving us speechless while savouring the delicious herbs infused meat. We must say that the first dish itself already leave us wanting more.

2. Homemade Tortellini Pasticciati    (RM48++)

Homemade Tortellini Pasticciati served atop a trail of delicious beef ragu.

Just as we finish up on the La Porchetta, our second dish arrived. Neroteca’s Homemade Tortellini Pasticciati which we were slightly confused by the simplistic plating having seen the nicely decorated La Porchetta beforehand. The Tortellini is served atop of a trail of beef ragu sauce which is a meat-based sauce, in this case, beef was used. The first bite caught us by surprise as we didn’t expect much. This is a good lesson on don’t judge a book by its cover, the tortellini although didn’t look imposing but the taste doesn’t disappoint.

The tortellini was very flavourful with a filling of grounded salami, prosciutto, pepperoni, grated parmesan, grated nutmeg and egg. To balance out the powerful taste of tortellini we recommend eating with the milder beef ragu sauce. Overall, the Tortellini Pasticciati is a well-thought-out dish combining the stronger flavour of tortellini with a milder beef ragu sauce. However, the presentation of the dish could have been a tad better.

3. Neroteca’s Classic Tiramisu    (RM29++)

Neroteca's refreshing Classic Tiramisu topped with fresh strawberry, blueberry, mint leaves and a slice of dried orange.

After a roller coaster taste adventure, what better way to finish off our meal than with dessert, Neroteca’s Classic Tiramisu. Upon serving we notice that the tiramisu is served in a small glass jar which is cute and is topped with fresh strawberry, blueberry and a slice of dried orange. The Classic Tiramisu is well-balanced of sweet and bitter, which is refreshing and the ideal way to end a meal.

To conclude, we are a strong believer that a good restaurant not only need to serve good food, but it should have a conducive dining environment, good music and of course great services. Having said that, Neroteca has fulfilled those requirements and we are happy to have dined here.
