Celebrating Love This Valentine’s Day 2019 at Bijan Bar & Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur

It was during the preparation for Chinese New Year that we received an invitation from Bijan Bar & Restaurant for a special sneak peak session on their Valentine’s menu. This stunned us for a little just to realize that this Valentine’s Day 2019 will take place within the Chinese New Year celebration.

We had a dose of excitement as Bijan has always been surprising us with their innovative ways of enjoying food. What made us more thrilled was this award-winning Malay fine-dining restaurant had come up with an out-of-ordinary menu –  Baba Nyonya Dondang Sayang to pay homage to the unique Malay and Chinese cultural marriage – a thoughtful and meaningful effort for this special occasion.

The table was decorated with beautiful lanterns.

It took us only a few minutes to reach the restaurant as Bijan is located just a mere stone throw’s away from KLCC. Bijan welcomed us with a warm yet chic ambience and serenaded us by its soothing music background – an intimate setting for a romantic escapade. As we stepped in, the restaurant was fully packed with people. We were lucky enough to have a special table arrangement. If you are planning to visit this fine-dining restaurant, don’t forget to make reservations in advance.

A sneak preview of the Valentine’s menu at Bijan

We couldn’t wait to start this unique culinary adventure to relish a 4-course Baba-Nyonya-inspired menu which we were introduced that it would bring a “twist on traditional offerings of togetherness”.

Before starting the meal, diners will be spoilt with choices as there are 4 types of complimentary cocktail or mocktail to choose from. Each couple can pick 2 of these unique drinks.

From left to right – Pink Ginger & White Hibicus Mocktail which were refreshing and subtle in sweetness.

Don’t Cut Ali Cocktail which is named after the main ingredient Tongkat Ali – a natural energy booster herb. Expect a hint of coffee taste and a robust sensation with a touch of heat aftertaste.

An exciting cocktail – Chili Martini which would make you say wow for the burst of flavors on the tongue.

1st Course – Sharing Is Caring

King Fish Otak-otak, Prawn Coconut and Banana Blossom Rolls

We began by reveling in Srikandi – a sharing plate featuring King Fish Otak-otak, Prawn Coconut and Banana Blossom Rolls in pairs. These bite-sized morsels were perfectly presented to showcase a different beauty of familiar offerings in a finer approach.

The King Fish Otak-otak appeared in an out-of-ordinary yet fine-looking shape – cylinder, with an incredibly crispy fish skin lain on top. Take a bite and a hint of spiciness and molten goodness will excite your taste buds! The rolls impressed me as they were fried to à point and filled with banana blossoms which resulted in an absolutely crunchy texture along with a tantalizing aroma! Finally, the Prawn Coconut oozed a delicate sweetness as it was coated in coconut crumbs.

2nd Course – Togetherness

Pan Seared Scallop on Coconut Potato Puree Drizzled with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Lemongrass Espuma and Budu Belacan Caviar

Our second course – Kekapis Arjuna, totally made us gobsmacked for the seemed-to-be-caviar creation. Using 2 familiar local ingredients including budu (anchovies sauce) and belacan (shrimp paste), the chef had amazingly turned them into a caviar-like delight which exuded a delectable dollop of savory and sourness in each bite. The Pan Seared Scallop was silky smooth, ambrosially rich and delightful. Our advice is to quickly savor the scallop after it is plated to fully enjoy its deliciousness and avoid it turning cold!

3rd Course – A Match in Heaven

Half Baby Lobster Laksa Baba Nyonya Classic Served with Otak-otak & Homemade Squid Ink Pasta

First was an eye-catching bowl of Laksa Baba Nyonya classic with a yellow gravy which was so vibrant that we couldn’t stop admiring. The Squid Ink Pasta (which nestled under the lobster) was skillfully handmade and perfectly mingled with the subtle creaminess of the laksa. I was in love with this dish as the heap of piquancy from the laksa excellently accentuated the lobster flavors and the Otak-otak was incredibly spot-on.

Pan Seared Fermented Prime Australian Angus Ribeye Served with Roasted Smoked Rice and Herbal Tricolor Rice

The Daging Salai Angus Nasi Ulam was a true show stopper! Beautiful slices of Fermented Prime Australian Angus Ribeye were set on top of a colorful bed of Roasted Smoked Rice and Herbal Tricolor Rice. Only the best rice was hand-picked to be smoked for 6 hours under slow fire for the best flavors. The 3-day fermented beef also amazed us with its juiciness and an irresistible beefy taste in the mouth. The restaurant’s homemade sauce, which was put in a pitcher plant (wow!), was splendid as it enhanced the beef taste. We relished everything about this dish!

4th Course – Happy Ending

From left to right – Nila Seputih Salju and Bersepuh Emas

We ended our meal with two superb delicacies which the flavors still linger in our mind up till now.

First off, Nila Seputih Saljiu which is Wajik and Bunga Telang Rambutan Sorbet Served on a Bed of Coconut Snow. The sorbet was not only tantalizing for its natural color from the butterfly pea flower but also sumptuous with a subtle sweetness from the rambutan. The wajik (sticky rice cake) was an exquisite addition as it went well with the melt-in-the-mouth coconut snow.

Next was Bersepuh Emas which is Tapai Pulut and Mango Sorbet With Crispy Mango Skin and Fruit Leather. The use of mango skin as a part of this delight totally made us astonished! To be honest, I did not know mango skin could be this tasty! The Tapai Pulut, using family-heirloom recipe, was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. A spoonful of this combination was enough to titillate my palate and capture my heart.

As a celebration of Valentine’s Day and the last day of Chinese New Year (also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day), the menu will be available on 14th & 19th February 2019. We expressed our wish of having the menu throughout the entire week, yet the chef revealed that he had to arrange this to preserve the highest quality of the ingredients – another reason for us to pay respect to this man!

Special thanks to Bijan Bar & Restaurant for having us on this sensory journey to excite the palate and delight our heart and soul. Thank Chef Razis for inspiring us with your creativity, passion and thoughtfulness in each dish.

View Top Dishes at Cicchetti Di Zenzero Here

[ELITE Review] 3 Must-Try Signature Dishes at Cicchetti Di Zenzero, Kuala Lumpur

Cicchetti Di Zenzero is, inarguably, one of the go-to restaurants of many Italian food aficionados in Kuala Lumpur. Reasons are varied for why people choose to come to this food haven. Some say they are addicted to the exquisite cicchetti (the bite-sized appetizers or “Italian tapas”) that well represent Italia in KL here. Others believe they are in love with the welcoming atmosphere where they can have a little chit-chat whilst relishing a delicious cicchetto and thirst-quenching wine. Sometimes, it’s not because of any solid reasons that drive someone here but simply just for an indulgence in authentic Venetian cicchetti.

We came to Cichetti Di Zenzero in the pursuit of an unforgettable Italian dining adventure. Of course, we would not want you to miss out the chance to take joy in the best dishes here and that’s why we will share with you the 3 dishes that we love the most while dining here!

1/ Il Tagliere Di Affettati

Click Here To View Il Tagliere Di Affetati at Cicchetti Di ZenzeroIl Tagliere Di Affettati

It’s hard to resist ordering some authentic cold cuts first to whet our palate. What’s better than trying chef’s selection of four types of cold cuts that took months to cure? Not to mention this pork-free Italian cold cuts for 2 also feature 3 kinds of delectable cheese (one type of hard cheese and two types of medium-hard cheese) and beautifully garnished with a few homemade sun-dried tomatoes and olive on top. Filled with authentic Italian flavors and a well-balanced taste of saltiness and sweetness, the Il Tagliere Di Affettati is perfect to pair with a cup of wine!

2/ Angel Hair With Sardinian Bottarga

Click Here To View Angel Hair With Sardinian Bottarga at Cicchetti Di ZenzeroAngel Hair with Sardinian Bottarga

Another dish that we would highly recommend you is the gorgeous Angel Hair With Sardinian Bottarga. The traditional aglio olio easily won our hearts for its fresh-to-the-bite tiger prawns which are carefully handpicked and the flavorful, delectable bottarga – salted fish roes, which mingle perfectly with the angel hair pasta. If you have a knack for spicy food, you would love the addition of the red chilies which impart mild spiciness that nicely accentuates the flavors of the dish.

3/ Slow and Low

Click Here To View Slow and Low Dish at Cicchetti Di ZenzeroSlow and Low

The last dish – Slow and Low, caught us by surprise. As lamb shank is a dish that requires considerable skills to bring out the best of its taste, we were quite amazed to see how excellently this classic Italian ossobuco (special Lombard cuisine braised with vegetable, white wine and broth) is cooked here! As suggested by its name, the lamb shank is slowly braised for hours until it has a melt-in-the-mouth texture before being put on top of creamy polenta. This Slow and Low is absolutely our favorite dish of the day and of course, you should also give it a try!

ELITE Review: Tamarind Hill KL, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Last week I received a surprise visit from my mom. (Yes, our moms are always like that!) I decided to treat her to a nice place in town where we can chill and enjoy delectable and exotic foods. Thai food was our choice this time as the mixture of Thai spices and herbs would make us feel reinvigorated. My mom finally agreed to go for the 2017 TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Award – Tamarind Hill Kuala Lumpur at Jalan Sultan Ismail.

Tamarind Hill’s tranquil ambience exudes the illusion of being ‘out-of-town’.

Scrumptious authentic Thai food with great tranquil ambience, the restaurant is truly a place to be “out-of-town” right in the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur.
Of course I took advantage of my ELITE Membership which enables me to redeem free signature dishes here! Saving more money while treating my Mom to exquisite delights, why not?

1/ Tamarind Hill Platter (RM 53+)

Tamarind Hill Platter includes 4 eye-catching bite-sized kinds of appetizer.

Our first dish was a beautiful platter of 4 enticing kinds of appetizer including fried tiger prawns and kangkung, fresh spring rolls, grilled satay and last but not least, chicken balls and orange. The dish immediately captured my attention with its vibrant colors and an irresistible smell. I couldn’t wait anymore to savour the first piece – the fried tiger prawn and kangkung!

The crunchy fried tiger prawns and the refreshing spring rolls made me yearn for more.

The incredibly crunchy popiah skin was coated with a combination of Thai peanut sauce and plum sauce which resulted in a delicately sweet and sour taste. It was mind-blowing to know that the restaurant carefully handpicked small and fresh peanuts to get the best taste of the Thai peanut sauce. The prawn was a true star with its moist and firm flesh. It brought a clean, brisk and sweet flavor which then lingered in my mouth. Tasty!

Next came the fresh spring rolls which impressed me with its luscious and non-overpowering spiciness. With a perfect combination of herbs, chili and homemade Thai seafood sauce, the rolls made us feel rejuvenated. The vegetables were absolutely fresh, the herbs were aromatic and the unique spicy and sour taste made me yearn for more!

The grilled satay with authentic Thai tamarind sauce was tender and flavoursome.

After savoring the other enthralling delights, I knew this satay would be something special! The grilled chicken was impeccably soft and the tamarind sauce really won my heart! I could still vividly remember its flavorsome and sweet taste which I believe could only come from the authentic Thai sauce! A bit of chili flake and pepper was added to bring a hot and strong flavor to the satay which will be balanced out by the piece of cucumber that came along. I would say it was one of the best satays I had ever tried.

The chicken-peanut ball was like a candy, exuding a delicately sweet taste in my mouth.

Last came a jaw-dropping delight! At the first glimpse, the decoration was impressively eye-catching as it was akin to a phoenix for me. I took one piece of the chicken-peanut ball with orange and “wow” was the word came out of my mouth! There was a touch of acidity from the orange which blended beautifully with the delicately sweetness of the chicken mixed with peanuts. The chicken ball was similar to a piece of candy which quickly melt in your mouth. It was incredibly fresh and it made me close my eyes in mere satisfaction!

2/ Beef Ribs served in a Dry Green Curry (RM 85+)

The “Beef Ribs served in a Dry Green Curry” appeared in an unpretentious presentation but its taste totally blew my mind.

Here comes my favorite dish of the day! Appeared in such an unpretentious presentation, it totally blew my mind. The dish emanated a hint of sweetness from the coconut milk and a bit of freshness from the Thai basil. You might look at it and say: “Well, just beef and green curry, what’s special about it anyway?” and that was my first thought! Right afterwards, I knew I was wrong.

The beef was lip-smackingly tender and truly what you would call melt-in-the-mouth!

Every shred of the meat relished a succulent taste. I couldn’t keep myself from excitement in every bite. As the coconut milk was made freshly, its taste was unique and flavorful. A lingering sweetness and freshness coming from the herbs blended in the green curry. This lusciously green curry would stun you for its taste that’s rich in both flavor and nutrients. A real winner in the taste and totally worth the money spent!

3/ Deep-Fried River Lobster served with Tamarind Sauce (RM 80+)

The River Lobster and tamarind were freshly imported from Thailand which made the dish even more delectable.

Finally, we ended with an equally palatable dish of Deep-Fried River Lobster. I love the fact that the lobster along with the tamarind were imported from Thailand. Frozen lobster would end up becoming tough and rubbery so a fresh lobster would be a perfect choice. Thai tamarind is something I am always in love with as its pleasant smell and sweet taste stand out compared to other tamarind sauce. The dish presentation was striking and I was so eager to have my first piece. The lobster’s fresh and bouncy flesh truly laces the palate with a umami and savoury flavor. The ‘meat-ilicious’ river lobster paired perfectly and drenched with the delectable tamarind sauce. A highly addictive and flavorful indulgence. It’s definitely a desirable dish.

If you love to give Tamarind Hill Kuala Lumpur a try, you can make a booking for the restaurant here.

And well, someone might wonder how I redeem the signature dish for free and I won’t keep it my own secret. If you want to know more, you can read more about the ELITE Membership here.
